But...I Really Do Still Care

It's been about a month since that gawd awful day that first lady Melania Trump chose to insensitively wear her Zara, "I Really Don't Care. Do You?" jacket while visiting the shelter where many children had been separated from their parents at the U.S border. While many of us where shocked at her behavior, I couldn't help but scream YES! I DO CARE!

Melania Trumps "I Really Don't Care" Jacket.

Most recently, I care because there are many children who have yet to be returned to their parents after having been separated from them for over a month. Just to give a little short recap:

  • A court 30-day deadline had been put in place in order to reunite the children with their families by yesterday, July 26th, 2018.

  • Although, about 1,412 children have been reunited with their parents, there are still about 711 children who have not.

  • Many were not reunited because their parents aren't in the Unites States, their cases are still under review, or their parents have a criminal history.

Today, as I have followed up with the news updates, I have noticed that many people are praising the government for reunited the children with their parents. I am not. They should not be praised for something that was never supposed to happen, and in my eyes there are still 711 children that need to be reunited with their families. Until then, I will continue to make a statement speaking out about how much I care.

I purchased this jacket from Urban Outfitters and had my dear artist friend, Gerry Simpson paint on the back of it to make a statement. I want to be loud and clear that I do care that children are being separated from the ones who love and protect them most. I wear my jacket for the following reasons:

1. To support the belief that children should NOT be indiscriminately separated from their mothers as they are escaping violent situations; especially BABIES.

2. To create awareness that we are what we wear. Careful to make sure it represents who you are.

3. Because I am grateful we live in a country where we are not prosecuted for standing for what we believe in.

In the meantime, you can find me wearing this jacket until changes are made and every child is reunited with their parent. How are you making a statement for what you believe in? Comment below.

Xoxo,

Felicia
